Competition: design your own MSN Messenger 6 emoticons!
Competition: design your own MSN Messenger 6 emoticons!

dwergs says ( 16 May 2003 ):

Competition time! You've already seen a few new emoticons Microsoft has added to the currently unreleased MSN Messenger 6.0 (if not, scroll your eyes down just a bit -or- check out our MSN Messenger 6 page).

Now we challenge all Photoshop wizards out there to suggest and design emoticons that could.. no: SHOULD be added to MSN Messenger 6.0! Go crazy with that pencil tool and show us the cutest, the funniest and the baaaaaadest MSN emoticons ever!

If you want, you can use as a template. Get eyes, lips, etc. from your own screenshots of MSN Messenger. But it has to be A SMILEY (a little yellow fella). UPDATE: People asked me if they could do an animated one. The answer is YES OF COURSE!

What can you win?
The absolute best emoticon will win a $30 gift certificate (that's 18.5) at Firebox.com.
The second best wins a personalised license key for Encrypted Messenger worth $14.95.

Please respect these rules:
1. Send a mail including your name, country and your smiley(s) in the best possible quality to: (Only e-mails to this address will be counted as a valid entry).
2. Be original, don't be a copycat.
3. You are allowed to submit unlimited different emoticons. This will increase your chances to win!
4. The winners will be chosen as follows: the Mess.be crew picks their favorites and these will be featured in an ultimate online poll to let the Messers decide.
5. By submitting you give Mess.be (and its partners) the permission to use your graphics on the web, in emoticon patches, skins, etc.

What are you waiting for? Start > Programs > Adobe > Adobe Photoshop ;) (or any other gfx software of course).

Exclusive: MSN Messenger 6.0 News and its emoticons

Zero1 says ( 15 May 2003 ):

According to sources close to Neowin, Microsoft's MSN department are preparing a "Public Preview" of MSN Messenger 6.0. This preview could be launched as soon as next week.

As Neowin covered before, the preview will contain new emoticons, a My MSN Picture, conversation logging, games, and better webcam support for Windows XP. As for the emoticons side of Messenger, Neowin got hold of a few of the new emoticons that are going to be included in MSN Messenger 6.0! Some of them seem pointless and some are even animated (not in the screenshot, sorry).

Unfortunately we have no new screenshots of MSN Messenger 6.0 itself.

Newbie answer: If all else fails re-install MSN Messenger
Newbie answer: If all else fails re-install MSN Messenger

dwergs says ( 15 May 2003 ):

A question I get asked a lot through e-mail is how to get rid of the polygamy patch, the Nega patch, emoticons patches, the L&H mod, etc. as they usually don't come with an uninstall utility.

The solution is easy, really, just uninstall MSN or Windows Messenger, download it again from the official homepage and re-install. Don't worry, this completely clean Messenger will still 'know' your contact list and recognise Plus! should it be installed.

The iLoo indeed a SERIOUS project and not a late April Fools joke

dwergs says ( 14 May 2003 ):

The "iLoo" project (see below) became the butt of jokes around the world after it was disclosed two weeks ago. On Monday Microsoft said it was just a joke. Then yesterday it changed the story and said iLoo was a real project, but executives killed it after reading the news coverage.

Now the company has a credibility problem as well as a red face!

dwergs says ( 13 May 2003 ):

Right before the start of the E3 expo, Microsoft announces it will broaden its console's appeal beyond pure gamers. Starting later this year, an enhanced version of Xbox Live will beef up the service's community features, letting subscribers find friends even when they're not signed in to Xbox Live. They'll be able to send notifications to friends using PCs, PDAs and cell phones. Yes, with any device enabled with MSN Messenger.

Silly Microsoft claims that the iLoo, an outhouse with a built-in terminal for Web browsing [read more], was an April Fools' Day gag even though it was announced May 2. 'Grapjurken!' we'd say in Belgium.

 The Passport Service Vulnerability Story
The Passport Service Vulnerability Story

dwergs says ( 13 May 2003 ):

First came PakCERT's Security Advisory PC-080503.

ZDNet.com reports: "A serious security flaw in Microsoft's Passport service put customers' accounts, including their personal information and credit card numbers, at risk of being hijacked." [Read Article]

Next stop: "Microsoft security and product teams worked overnight to fix a flaw in the password reset feature of the Passport identity service that threatened to compromise millions of accounts." [Read Article]

But no happy ending, because "Microsoft faces a possible investigation and significant fines for a security lapse that could have exposed the personal information of millions of consumers." [Read Article]

All this over some evident flaw most of us might've probably already tried to exploit for fun! My my...

What's so new about the new MSN Messenger, huh?
What's so new about the new MSN Messenger, huh?

dwergs says ( 13 May 2003 ):

You've probably heard of the new features in MSN Messenger 6.0 by now [if not, scroll a few posts down]. Now some of you might agree with Ross Rubin, an analyst with eMarketer in New York City, stating "some of it just seems like catch-up," citing videoconferencing as an example. "We're not seeing a lot of innovation."

A Microsoft representative countered that Monday's sneak peek was only the first glimpse of the product, and that future showings would answer critics. We're looking forward to these official 'leaks'!

AOL Instant Messenger reduces freedom of 'expression'
AOL Instant Messenger reduces freedom of 'expression'

dwergs says ( 13 May 2003 ):

America Online started charging a small fee of $1.95 per month or $9.95 anually for the Expressions in the free version of AOL Instant Messenger (probably of MSN Messenger's biggest rival). 'Expressions' are downloadable skins that add graphics and animation to your buddy list and IM windows. That subscription buys a user unlimited access to over 65 AOL Expressions and users can change themes at will.

What a weird move for AOL to start asking money for skins, certainly after Microsoft only just announced improved customisation abilities in the upcoming MSN Messenger 6.0! In any case, Microsoft said that none of MSN Messenger's advanced services would require a subscription to Microsoft's MSN 8 online service, as is the case with MSN Messenger 5's support for shared Web browsing.

MSN Messenger Service recently reached a record high of 100 million active users per month worldwide. In addition, MSN Messenger was the No. 1 instant messaging service in the following 11 countries during the month of March 2003: Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. (That same month Mess.be welcomed 735.540 different MSN Messenger Service users which is still only 0.7% of the total users. Go tell your friends to Mess with MSN Messenger!)

MSN Messenger 6.0 Revealed!

timothy says ( 12 May 2003 ):

It is official from now on: Microsoft published a sneak peak to the completely revamped MSN 6 due for release this Summer. Its consumer-oriented marketing proposition is "all about having fun and expressing yourself online."

- As mentioned earlier, the new Messenger will offer better webcam support (screenshot) .

- Another new cool feature will be the "Launch Site" option that integrates for MSN games like checkers, double solitaire and other Zone.com games while chatting (screenshot).

- A total of 75 emoticons can be used to express yourself. That 29 new ones! We've found out about two already: the mouth sealed emoticon and a football emoticon (after Nikky says: bring it on).

dwergs says ( 12 May 2003 ):

As mentioned earlier, the official release of Messenger Plus! brought back the "current WinAmp track" notification to MSN Messenger 5.0. Maybe you can not use the (!WAT) tag in your nickname but the quick texts and away messages in Plus! are an alternative way to show the world what music you're into.

- More special Plus! tags.

Exclusive: MSN Messenger 6.0 details emerge
Exclusive: MSN Messenger 6.0 details emerge

Zero1 says ( 11 May 2003 ):

Yesterday neowin exclusively revealed the release date for MSN Messenger 6.0 and discussed the possibilities for the future of both Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger. Today more details have emerged about what MSN Messenger 6.0 will bring. According to reliable sources close to neowin, MSN Messenger is indeed going straight for the consumer and leaving Windows Messenger far behind (in terms of functions).

MSN Messenger 6.0, due to be released on the 17th of July will include a myriad of personalization options aimed at home users. Users will have the option to have a "My MSN Picture" which is a buddy picture of yourself displayed in much the same way as in MSN Explorer 8.0. Users will also see better Webcam support for Windows XP, more games and most importantly 75 (ouch !) new emoticons. There will be the possibilty to use your own emoticons, however the other person you are chatting to will have to have these emoticons too - this isn't very clear at this stage.

For everyone into Instant Messaging it will be a great release. This kind of customization doesn't stop here though. Also included will be "chat backgrounds" (allowing users to customize what they see whilst they are chatting) and the ability to log MSN Messenger conversations (the guys over at Messenger Plus! might have something to say about that one). Whatever happens, on the 17th of July MSN will have set up services specifically targetted at it's MSN 8 subscribers to combine the functionality of MSN Messenger 6.0 with that of MSN Explorer 8.5.
