Group Blockers

dwergs says ( 12 Oct 2002 ):

I just added two identical add-ons, so it's up to you to pick one of them. Both allow you to block entire groups of contacts instead of individual persons. Timothy's Group Blocker is available here, Heavy E's Group Blocker is right here. Thanks Timz and Heavy E!

MSN 8 wins praise for online safety
MSN 8 wins praise for online safety

dwergs says ( 11 Oct 2002 ):

Even before it is officially launched, MSN 8 has won high marks from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children as well as Internet mom Robin Raskin. You can read Microsoft's full press report on this matter here.

Concerning the new MSN Messenger client, the increased parental controls come down to:
- a parent-approved contact list;
- an e-mail based request line, through which kids can ask permission to use restricted MSN Messenger accounts;
- a weekly e-mail message sent to parents details MSN Messenger accounts of people with whom they've corresponded and attempted to correspond.

It's Instant Messaging meets Big Mother ;)

 Outlook Express virus
Outlook Express virus

dwergs says ( 11 Oct 2002 ):

Unrelated to the MSN Messenger targetting worm below, Microsoft has recently released a security patch for Outlook Express 5.5 or 6.0 users. Better update, because in the worst case scenario it allows an attacker to execute just about any code on your system.

 Henpeck worm
Henpeck worm

dwergs says ( 11 Oct 2002 ):

A new worm type virus written in Visual Basic 6.0 is on the loose and propagates through MSN Messenger. Known and detected by several antivirus tools as Henpeck, W32/Fleming.worm or Win32.MsnWorm.Rodok.A, this virus sends messages containing a link to a malicious online file called BR2002.exe. Only by clicking the link you manually infect your computer and send the same link to everyone on your contact list (this procedure sounds familiar, no?).

Good news is the malicious file, which was a disguised CD-key for Half Life/Counterstrike, has been removed from the Web already. Bad news is it also planted a backdoor on your system known as BKDR_EVILBOT.A, allowing hackers to use your computer as a platform to perform denial-of-service attacks (a bad ass form of flooding).

Scared yet? Then right-click your taskbar and launch the Task Manager. If you see a process called BR2002 running, you've become a victim. But that would be exceptionnal, because Trend Micro only reports 27 infected systems!

Our friends at BitDefender have made an interesting analysis, including removal instructions.

 Anemic
Anemic

kutforum says ( 09 Oct 2002 ):

Have you ever heard of anemic? If not, it's most understandable, I have just learned what it is a few hours ago. A good friend I know has it, but what is it now? A person who has anemic, has an iron-deficiency in the blood. This can be treated, but the person also needs to want to be treated. If you have gone through the same hell as her or maybe you know what it's like because you come in contact with people who have anemic, or you just think you might know what she is going through. There is a way how you can make the road a little easier for one person. E-mail her your experiences or maybe just your best wishes or the best motivation talk you have in you to this address: cucarach0@hotmail.com

Thank you for all the people who will send an e-mail.

 MSN Chat Member Profiles exploit
MSN Chat Member Profiles exploit

dwergs says ( 09 Oct 2002 ):

UnderDOC just told me he, GroundZero and rachel found out about an MSN Member Profile exploit. It comes down to this: your profile can be changed just by visiting a malicious (porn) site!

What can you do? Nothing, just stay away from Member Profile pages.
What can Microsoft do? They have to get rid of the % character in the value hexUserName on http://chat.msn.com/invite.msnw.

Fully exposed and undressed at MSNFanatic.com.

 MSN Experience 3?
MSN Experience 3?

dwergs says ( 07 Oct 2002 ):

Remember MSN Experience v2? (homepage) Of course you do. Its creator Taz is considering a third version, but since it was already a pretty complete add-on, you need to convince him about what he can actually improve. If you like the idea of MSN Experience v3, then cast your vote here.

dwergs says ( 07 Oct 2002 ):

It didn't take long before I got my hands on the first full skin inspired by the new Mess with MSN Messenger layout (for some reason, I don't expect this to be the last one as well). Fury14, from MsnMessenger2k, did a grrrreat job, as you can see in this screenshot. Thanks Fury!! Of course you can download it right here (build 4.6.0078).
