Katherine Murray, a popular computer book author/blogger, and Mike Torres, a key member of the MSN team, joined hands and wrote 208 pages about "sharing your story" through Microsoft's free blogging service, MSN Spaces. Topics include the basics of blogging and setting up your own space, customizing it, adding a photo album and lists. In this book, you'll also find tips on how to build a community with your Space, and how to extend your communications with MSN Messenger and Hotmail.

msn spaces book"There are some features discussed in the book that aren't yet available to the general public," says Mike Torres on his blog, "so you can look at some sections of the book as a little bit of a teaser trailer of things yet to come."

 Honey, they shrunk the webcams!
Honey, they shrunk the webcams!

The 25-year-old personal peripherals company, Logitech, unveiled new versions of their their webcams at CeBIT in Germany.

"The new Logitech QuickCam Connect*, QuickCam Messenger*, QuickCam Chat, and Logitech QuickCam Express webcams feature a smaller eyeball design that fits with the minimalist tastes of the modern consumer - the new eyeball is just 45 mm. wide, 33% smaller than previous models. Logitech evolved the webcam design so that it better complements the aesthetics of the living room, the home office, the den - or any of the varied places people are using PCs in the modern-day home. This is important as video calling continues to become more prevalent in everyday computing."

The four products will be available in various worldwide regions beginning this spring for suggested retail prices ranging from $24.99 to $39.99 in the U.S.

*These two models feature an integrated microphone with echo-canceling audio technology.

Origami unfolded: Microsoft's Ultra-Mobile Personal Computers
Origami unfolded: Microsoft's Ultra-Mobile Personal Computers

dwergs says ( 09 Mar 2006 ):

microsoft origami umpc - windows messengerFollowing the teaser campaign and leaked promo for the mysterious Origami, Microsoft today unveiled details for Ultra-Mobile Personal Computers (UMPCs) at the CeBIT fair in Hannover, Germany. UMPCs are "mobile computing devices that feature small, lightweight, carry-everywhere hardware designs coupled with the full functionality of a Windows-based PC and a choice of input options, including enhanced touch-screen capabilities."

Bill Mitchell, corporate vice president of the Windows Mobile Platforms Division: "UMPC devices will weigh less than 2 pounds (.9 kilo), with a 7-inch (17.8 centimeters) screen size that offers the user a choice of text input methods. The touch-enhanced display can be used as an on-screen QWERTY keyboard (called dial keys) to navigate, or users can employ a stylus to input handwritten information. They can also input content with a traditional keyboard, linked either by USB port or wireless Bluetooth connectivity. UMPC microsoft origami umpc - inputdevices will have a battery life of two and a half hours or more, and feature 30-60 GB hard drive for storage, with Intel Celeron M, Intel Pentium M or VIA C7-M processors. Some devices may include additional built-in features such as GPS, a webcam, fingerprint reader, digital TV tuners, and compact flash and SD card readers. UMPCs can be connected through Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Ethernet networks. Some UMPCs will be able to connect via wide-area networking [...] We anticipate pricing in the US$599-$999 price-range."

I'm hoping to get my hands on one of them for a while at CeBIT in order to judge the on-screen keyboard from a Messer's point of view. I can imagine the voice and video conversation options inside Messenger being much more practical for IM with this kind of device though.

 Bling My Sid

dwergs says ( 08 Mar 2006 ):

bling my sid - ice age display picture generatorFor a long time promotional websites for motion pictures used to neglect their MSN Messenger-using audience, providing solely goodies for AOL Instant Messenger. Fortunately, I'm seeing more and more official movie homepages changing their ways and offer MSN Display Pictures, Backgrounds and Emoticons. A fine example thereof is the spin off URL of the yet to be released Ice Age 2 movie: Bling My Sid. The mini-website in Flash allows you to dress one of the movie's main characters, Sid, and then export the result to an MSN Display Picture (or AIM Buddy Icon if you will). Regrettably, there is some loss of quality after the conversion and auto-resizing. But it's still nice of them to include our user group in their marketing plan.

If you know or come across official movie or band/singer websites with goodies for MSN Messenger users, let us know via this form. For unofficial content in the entertainment category, there's always Mess.be ;)

Dutch television station Talpa started a streaming broadcast experiment inside MSN Messenger and Windows Live Messenger. Via the worlds best app site you are able to launch a activity which allows you to watch the current live feed, or watch on-demand episodes of shows broadcasted earlier.

One down side: it doesn’t work.. yet... due to Active-x limitations you are not able to watch the stream from within Messenger yet.
