More MSN Messenger 6.1 Beta 0114 downloads

dwergs says ( 05 Sep 2003 ):

Timothy tracked down the location of the MSN Messenger 6.1 BETA where MSN 9 gets it from. This means you can download it straight from Microsoft.com.

And here's first batch of unofficial patches for MSN Messenger 6.1 downloads (use at your own risk):
- Ads & Beta-tag remover + Polygamy patch by RocK >> download
- plain Ads & Beta-tag remover by pHaez & vorte[x] >> download
- Multi-line MSN nicknames enabler by Covenant Hunter X >> download
- Ad remover by tHe_cLeanER >> Ad Remover
- NEW Dutch language file by PoTaToX >> download (REALLY fixed - thanks to those who reported)
- NEW Custom MSN Games enabler for 6.1.0114 >> look here.

That's about it for this build. Oh and thanks to bedrock too for submitting his patch too.

Custom Emoticons & Display Pictures Gallery
Custom Emoticons & Display Pictures Gallery

dwergs says ( 05 Sep 2003 ):

We're sorry for the partial inaccessibility of the MSN Emoticons & Display Pictures collection. It's not a hosting problem, but the gallery is simply a victim of its own success :| We're considering a few (drastic) innovations so stay tuned and meanwhile: please wait your turn.

Leaked: MSN Messenger 6.1 BETA Build 114
Leaked: MSN Messenger 6.1 BETA Build 114

dwergs says ( 05 Sep 2003 ):

MSN Messenger 6.1 Build 114 has leaked and is available at the following locations:

- Mirror #1 (US) by Monte, found at Neowin.net (bandwidth limit exceeded)
- Mirror #4 (NL) by Timothy
- Mirror #2 (US)
- Mirror #3 (UK) by Zero1 (removed)
(...no you're not dyslectic)

Noticeable changes: conversation window color changing, menu bar removing (press ALT to switch), "Featured Backgrounds" under the backgrounds pulldown menu (nothing special here yet) and a restyled toast. For screenshots, scroll down the news.

Be aware that Messenger Plus! doesn't work (yet*) with this new release and that this is only a BETA version. Stability of the software or the .NET connection is not guaranteed.

*UPDATE: A Plus! upgrade for MSN Messenger 6.1 BETA will be released very soon. In fact, Patchou has already finished it but he wants to add a couple of other fixes to the new release.

AOL's Live Help service keeps lips sealed on mysterious AOL-MSN outage
AOL's Live Help service keeps lips sealed on mysterious AOL-MSN outage

dwergs says ( 04 Sep 2003 ):

Optimism_, a curious messer (and that's the way we like 'em), questioned an employee of AOL's Live Help service shortly after MSN returned to AOL users. Here's the (slightly edited) transcript of their conversation:

ChatAgentUK045: Welcome to Member Help Interactive. Please present your question, and I will be with you in just a moment. :)
Pesimism: i am curious as to how access to hotmail.com was disabled earlier today along with the messenger service
ChatAgentUK045: Are you able to access MSN now?
Pesimism: yes i am, but surely the hotmail service runs on a standard port, so how would it have been that hotmail.com was unavailable this morning?
ChatAgentUK045: Because Hotmail is a part of MSN.
Pesimism: so are you suggesting access to all of msn was disabled? because port 80 itself wasnt blocked as i could access google
ChatAgentUK045: There was a technical problem with MSN.
Pesimism: an independant source plus your own status page suggested it was a fault with aol ;)
ChatAgentUK045: Ok.
Pesimism: ok, thanks, bye

Uninformed or holding something back? Of course, we won't speculate anything ;) Although a source close to Microsoft who asked to remain anonymous said the lockout stemmed from changes in a bandwidth 'peering' agreement between AOL and Microsoft.

Since the beginning of the Internet, service providers have piggybacked on one another's networks to deliver data more efficiently between end points. Companies, including AOL and Microsoft, have long established such peering relationships to efficiently route traffic.

Easy IP retrieval through MSN Messenger
Easy IP retrieval through MSN Messenger

dwergs says ( 04 Sep 2003 ):

Some people would call this procedure illicit, but sometimes you just need one's IP address, right? An invitation to a file transfer through MSN Messenger (the person on the other side doesn't even have to accept the transfer) is all ipGET 3.0 needs to retrieve the IP in question. Brought to us by Kaos and with props to 18c3, you can download it here (use for educational or beneficial purposes only, of course).

 MSNP9 Documented
MSNP9 Documented

dwergs says ( 04 Sep 2003 ):

One for the developers (and total MSN Messenger freaks): ZoRoNaX researched and documented the way the MSNP9 (MSN Messenger Protocol
Version 9) -used by MSN Messenger 6- sends user display images, custom emoticons and files. Future research will cover games, webcam and
voice conversations.

Last chance to experience old school MSN Messaging
Last chance to experience old school MSN Messaging

dwergs says ( 03 Sep 2003 ):

Time is running out for those who want to re-live the early days of MSN Messenger as Microsoft is forcing everybody to upgrade to MSN Messenger 5.0 or Windows Messenger 4.7.2000 by blocking access from older clients.

You have little more than a month left to commemorate old school MSN Messaging (the period from July 1999 to December 2001), so why not get nostalgic now and download these:

- MSN Messenger 1.0
- MSN Messenger 2.0
- MSN Messenger 2.2
- MSN Messenger 3.0
- MSN Messenger 3.5
- MSN Messenger 3.6
- MSN Messenger 4.5

A little version history is to be found here.

Important: We are faced with the extinction of antique MSN emoticons like: , , and . DON'T let this happen and cherish the classic MSN emoticons in your custom emoticon collection.

Offline MSN Messaging Service: FREE trial
Offline MSN Messaging Service: FREE trial

dwergs says ( 03 Sep 2003 ):

We've seen away messages telling your contacts where you are doing what and what time you will be back. But what happens when you get disconnected or turn off your computer? With Auto Messenger you can still tell people where you are and log received messages that are automatically delivered next time you sign in again.

When you switch off your computer or sign out of MSN Auto Messenger signs in on your behalf presenting your personalized away message to your users. Until you log in again, and you will be presented with received instant messages. Auto Messenger does not interfere in any way with your normal operation of MSN. There is no software to install, nothing to download and the service begins working for you immediately. Auto Messenger works with all versions of MSN Messenger up to and including 6.0.

During 30 days you can try it out yourself for free if you click this button:

 MSN 6.1 Download?
MSN 6.1 Download?

Wolkje says ( 02 Sep 2003 ):

As some of you might have already seen, the internal site for MSN Messenger 6.1 has been changed, once again. This time it looks like you're downloading version 6.1, but you're not!

Not yet anyhow, we expect the release to be very soon, but until now, it has not been released. Small sites stating otherwise do not have the file yet, so do not trust them! If it is out, you'll find it either here on Mess.Be or Neowin.net or Winbeta.org.

 AOL users experiencing problems
AOL users experiencing problems

Wolkje says ( 02 Sep 2003 ):

Are you an AOL user? Can't sign in your MSN? Well apparently AOL has some internal problems, so that's why you can't sign in. They said they're working on the problem, and that you should try again later.

Update!
Well it seems that all AOL hell broke loose now.. AOL managed to ban (?) proxy ports too! So now AOL users can't connect to proxies anymore.. Basically, every AOL user, now has to wait for AOL to repair the problem, and in the meantime, will not have access to any of the Microsoft services.

More personalizing in upcoming MSN Messenger 6.1
More personalizing in upcoming MSN Messenger 6.1

dwergs says ( 01 Sep 2003 ):

Timothy spotted 2 personalizing features announced as "(New!)" on the internal MSN Messenger site:

1) Change the color of your conversation window:
Choose a color for your conversation window to match your background, your desktop color scheme, even your mood! Select a color to use all the time, or choose a different color for each conversation.

Non-blue conversation window backgrounds will undoubtfully look better with this.

2) Customize your display name:
Change your display name as often as you change moods. Select a new name for every conversation.

Not sure how the nickname-per-conversation thing will look like really, but it's also mentioned on the public site already.

I survived Pukkelpop 2003!

dwergs says ( 31 Aug 2003 ):

Yes, dwergs is still alive! But I spent the last three days at the Pukkelpop festival in Belgium. We tagged the festival area with exclusive Mess.be buttons not available anywhere else and I hope they will be cherished by their discoverers ;)

Anyway, updates will be continued after my full physical recovery.
