Added: Yahoo! Emoticons... for your Messenger!

dwergs says ( 01 Sep 2006 ):

Now that former rivals Microsoft and Yahoo! are smooching all over the place (most recent evidence), I guess even the biggest Windows Live/MSN Messenger fan is allowed to do some "cross-brand-breeding". That's why I added all 87 Yahoo! Messenger emoticons (that includes the secret emoticons) to our download gallery today. Might be fun too for those who were using Yahoo! Messenger before the interoperability feature went live, and are missing their familiar smiley faces.

Unlike the standard MSN Emoticons, almost all of Yahoo!'s are animated emoticons. And may I add that they offer some very useful emoticons too, expressing things like "talk to the hand", "daydreaming", "bring it on" and "nailbiting".

>> Browse all 87 Yahoo! Animated Emoticons.

PS: I've added an "animated" subcategory in each one of our emoticon categories. Please be so kind to overload us with your favorite animated emoticons and upload them directly into the most appropriate categories.

The one-click sex offender report button that was introduced in the UK last week, will also appear to Danish Messenger users starting next week. More about the deal between Microsoft Denmark and Red Barnet (Danish for "Save the Children") here... I think ;)

Computeract!ve reviews Microsoft LifeCam VX-3000

dwergs says ( 30 Aug 2006 ):

After linking to a review of the VX-6000, it's only fair that we also post one covering the Microsoft LifeCam VX-6000. According to Computeract!ve, this cheaper webcam model is easy to set up and simple to use. It loses two points out of five because the poor video and worse microphone quality... Ehm, aren't video and voice the main functions of a webcam? :S

Invasion of the Robots: Another Bonus Round
Invasion of the Robots: Another Bonus Round

dwergs says ( 30 Aug 2006 ):

Another incentive for you to start building your own Messenger bot for Microsoft's Robot Invaders contest: the first five people that submit their new and valid robot entries between now and Wednesday, September 6th (11:00am PST) will win US $200 in the form of an Amazon.com gift voucher (or a similar retailer).

Unlike the Weekend Madness bonus round we had before, there's an important rule in this one: your bot must be integrated with the Messenger Activity window and one other Windows Live service (Search, Alerts, Spaces, Virtual Earth, or Expo)!

How to submit correctly:
Step 1: Build it, host it, and make it available from the time you submit to the time "The Bonus Round" until judging closes (11:00am PST 9/6)
Step 2: Register your robot with Gallery > Messenger > Bots > Submit.
Step 3: If you use the Activity SDK register your Activity application via Gallery as well (Messenger > Activity > Submit).
Step 4: Register robot with contest site. Note: Each person is eligible for only 1 Bonus Round prize of $200.00.

By the way, the winners of the Weekend Madness round were Quiz Master Bot by jcmag, The Winning Bot by RaceProUK and michiel_999's Helpdesk Bot (add-to-contact list links only work in IE).

PC Magazine reviews Microsoft LifeCam VX-6000
PC Magazine reviews Microsoft LifeCam VX-6000

dwergs says ( 29 Aug 2006 ):

The Microsoft LifeCam VX-6000 announced in June has been reviewed by PC Magazine and it didn't do bad at all. It ows its four out of five rating thanks to its good video quality (at least when used with Windows Live Messenger), reasonable price (about US$99.95)and nice set of features like video effects and automatic face-tracking.

The disappointing mic costs one point: "We couldn't hear each other speak until we cranked each mic's volume nearly all the way up, and then we both heard a significant amount of feedback", says the PC Magazine reviewer.

All three Messenger Bot SDKs reviewed
All three Messenger Bot SDKs reviewed

dwergs says ( 29 Aug 2006 ):

Little more than two weeks left to submit your homemade bots to the Invasion of the Robots contest, so if you want to win one of those truly amazing prizes you might want to get your ass up and get started!

To build a bot for this competition, you need to make use of one of three available SDKs, of which the Incesoft Bot SDK and Akonix L7 Builder SDK were reviewed before. In his personal overview of the SDKs, Gwaam-creator J-Thread covers all of them, including the Colloquis Buddyscript SDK (previously known as Conversagent Buddyscript SDK). After reading his complete review here, I'm sure you'll know which one fits your needs best.

If you want us to link to the voting form for your bot entry straight from the Mess.be news, add some sort of promotion for us to your bot's replies (eg. triggered by the word "messenger") and let us know.

dwergs says ( 28 Aug 2006 ):

In March we already told you how to launch the Talpa TV activity but from now on you can access it directly via our Messenger Games & Activities launcher.

big brother msn messengerThe Talpa TV Live activity allows you to watch the broadcaster's (Dutch!) programs live or on-demand within a conversation window so you can discuss what you see with a buddy of your choice. They've also just added four live webcams to the activity, streaming footage from their recently started voyeurist Big Brother show. For Peeping Toms who want to spy on the candidates all alone, there's a Talpa TV Bot that'll launch the activity privately for you. Too bad the hottie of the show, Bridget, is not inside the house... Watch her present the live show via the activity tonight.

More features coming to Messenger for Mac 6.0
More features coming to Messenger for Mac 6.0

dwergs says ( 28 Aug 2006 ):

In addition to our previous news about the upcoming Messenger for Mac 6.0 release, we have also learned about a new Spell Checker feature. As you type messages, misspelled words are indicated with a red dotted underline. You can ignore these indications, add new words to the spelling dictionary, or turn off the spell checker completely.

Unlike what we believed before, you can add your own custom and even animated emoticons from images on your computer (as long as you're using your personal account, you cannot create emoticons when using your corporate account). You will also be able to put your most frequently used custom emoticons in the "Favorite" column of the Emoticons dialog box.

Messenger for Mac 6.0 is due for release later this year. In the meantime, you can tweak the latest version of Microsoft Messenger (for Mac) with our handy Mess Patch:
