Added: SmileyFactory Beta 1

zipp says ( 01 Nov 2003 ):

DJMystic has released this quite unique Smiley Emoticon Maker, which allows you to create your very own custom emoticons in seconds! The program is compact and very easy to use and outputs your emoticon directly into .png format. The program also allows you to save your creations as .emo files which can be modified by the program later!

This is the very first release of the program (BETA 1) and promises lots of new features and improvements in the future! This version is a very small demonstration of what is to come.

Artists: DJMystic is calling for any good artists out there who think they can contribute to the program to email him at djmystic[at]hardijzer[dot]mine[dot]nu - (replace [dot] with . and [at] with @). Please also send feedback and bug reports to the same address!

You can find the download and a screenshot right here! Have fun!

Microsoft employee fired for blogging picture
Microsoft employee fired for blogging picture

dwergs says ( 31 Oct 2003 ):

A Microsoft temporary employee found himself on the receiving end of a pink slip this week when he published a photo of the shipping and receiving loading dock area of the Microsoft campus on his Web blog. Microsoft fired him because it claimed the photo was a security risk (people viewing the photo would be able to figure out where the loading dock is located). The former employee later admitted what he did was wrong, though he did offer up an interesting conspiracy theory if you're into that kind of thing: The photo he took shows a pallet of brand-new PowerMac G5 computers being unloaded!

Boy have we got some treats for you to enjoy Halloween on MSN Messenger...

A new emoticon pack has been added: Halloween & Living Dead, a cooperation by Oliver and Dreamingweb from ItsElephants. Preview and download the full set here. In our emoticon gallery you'll find even more scary emoticons.

And why not send your LOLs, BRBs, HELLO's and other short messages (max. 5 characters) using horror emoticon fonts? We've added two wonderful new ones, created by Leo (once again, from the ItsElephants crew):

- the Dracula emoticon font adds that typical Transylvanian spirit to your conversations [download here]

- and the simply monstruous Halloween emoticon font [download here]

TIP: You can add the whole alphabet from these fonts in one go using CE/DP manager.
The following older fonts may have gotten burried in our download archives but they're definitely worth digging up tomorrow:

- the Alien emoticon font by Joe

- 4 fonts by Oliver: Blood emoticon font, Buffy emoticon font, Harry Potter font and Spooks emoticon font.

- Rocky Horror Picture Show, an emoticon font by Weirdal27

- last but not least, the Runes emoticon font by MNeMoNiCuZ.

Finally, here's a bloody message to you all!

MSN Explorer 9 Beta 4 and Messenger 6.2?
MSN Explorer 9 Beta 4 and Messenger 6.2?

zipp says ( 30 Oct 2003 ):

MSN have sent an email to their MSN Premium and Plus users yesterday stating a new refresh Beta is to be released today. This new beta (beta 4) of MSN's MSN Explorer will include new fixes and improvements which can be found
here at Neowin.net.

It is rumoured that an early build of MSN Messenger 6.2 is to be included in this beta, but I find that quite unlikely. Time will tell!

 MSN Now A House Divided
MSN Now A House Divided

dwergs says ( 30 Oct 2003 ):

Microsoft's MSN is splitting into two divisions: communications services (dial up and DSL (define), Hotmail, Passport and MSN Messenger) and information services (MSN portal, search function and e-commerce). Yusuf Mehdi will take over operations on the software side while Blake Irving will head the communications side. Both will report to MSN's senior vice president in charge of MSN, David Cole. In its quarter ending March 31, MSN lost $92 million, and only accounted for eight percent of Microsoft's total sales numbers.

 Microsoft disables Messenger Service
Microsoft disables Messenger Service

dwergs says ( 29 Oct 2003 ):

In keeping with its company-wide Trustworthy Computing pledge to stave off security problems by minimizing vulnerabilities, Microsoft said this week that it plans to switch off its Windows Messenger Service and activate Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) by default on XP boxes.

Windows Messenger Service -- not to be confused with the instant messaging service -- is used to exchange data between computers. Not only was the software being abused by spammers through the popup system messages, but it posed serious security risks.

A program, which some consultants dubbed the "son of MSBlaster," was recently circulating that takes advantage of a flaw that causes Windows-based computers to crash. So concerned are some companies in the industry that America Online disabled Windows Messenger on the Windows desktops of 20 million of its users as a precaution last week. And finally Microsoft itself is killing the software.

Big Sister Part 2: MSN & Yahoo still not safe
Big Sister Part 2: MSN & Yahoo still not safe

dwergs says ( 26 Oct 2003 ):

On the first of October 2003 the second part of SpyBoy's Big Sister project was launched and the main aim was to claim emails and passwords from various servers. The exploit had become more cunning and was now able to exploit both MSN and Yahoo servers, as well as getting the info from indiviual users, or internet cafes, educational facilities, etc.

The main rule from the beginning was to spy and NOT interfere with people, so Big Sister is only watching. The project details on methods used will be made public by SpyBoy and the rest of the crew when it is safe to do so.
