 Messenger and its Minor Difficulties
Messenger and its Minor Difficulties

Johnny_Mac says ( 28 Feb 2003 ):

Noticing the mess.be Version/Service stats by Daniel Winter, we have learnt that Microsoft today have started updating the MSN Messenger Service.

"Providing a quality experience to our end users is our top priority. We are working as quickly as possible to update the Messenger Service to resolve issues that some of our users have been experiencing with connectivity. The update will be in place in the near future, and a notice will be placed here when the update has been completed."

Some users of MSN Messenger will remember the problems the service encountered last year, and its issues related with connectivity. Mess will keep you posted with any further developments.

Johnny_Mac says ( 28 Feb 2003 ):

The MSN Messenger Service has started offering its users chances to win prizes if they tell their friends about the MSN service. Prizes include trips to holiday destinations and computer hardware/software for runners up. The competition is offered to MSN users around the world, but not all countries are participating yet (check your home MSN webpage for more information). Applicants must also have an active .NET passport and at least a certain amount of contacts on their MSN list – this depends on your location.

More information at Microsoft's MSN Messenger Competition site.

How's Internet (and MSN Messenger) in Iraq?
How's Internet (and MSN Messenger) in Iraq?

dwergs says ( 24 Feb 2003 ):

Cut off by sanctions both internal and external, Kurds find that the Web allows them access to the world thanks to Internet cafés.

Rawan Farid (16 years old) is a daily visitor of Kurdistan-Net. He spends 90 minutes each afternoon chatting with a "friend" (a female friend, actually, who lives on his very street). MSN messenger has supplanted smuggled letters as the traditional form of communication between Kurdish teenagers in a culture where people don't date.

I'm pleasantly surprised the Iraqi regime hasn't cut people off from instant messaging as it did with foreign television, movies, etc.

dwergs says ( 24 Feb 2003 ):

Microsoft is moving rapidly to sign European mobile network operators up to MSN Messenger. The company claims to have 14.6 million active users of its mobile MSN Messenger service in the European region so far compared to just 5.6 million for AIM and ICQ users or the 2.4 million mobile Yahoo! users.

- Messenger Service API: (messenger.exe)
Tap into the Messenger services on your instant messaging server or through the Microsoft .NET Messenger Service. This documentation will help you learn about Messenger Session Invite and Lock and Key APIs.

- Messenger Add-Ins API: (messengeraddins.exe)
This documentation shows you how to create add-in components for the Windows Messenger client on Microsoft Windows XP. The Add-In APIs are not available with any version of Windows Messenger other than 4.6 or 4.7 and are not available with MSN Messenger.

Microsoft hangs up on VoIP in Messenger
Microsoft hangs up on VoIP in Messenger

dwergs says ( 24 Feb 2003 ):

In an interesting article on Instant Messaging Planet, Ryan Naraine explains the recent e-mails sent out by net phone companies requesting its users to switch to MSN Messenger 5.

"The change is a small, yet important indication of Microsoft's direction in the IP-based communications space. Windows Messenger -- which remains available even if a user installs MSN Messenger -- serves as the focal point for many of the software behemoth's communications initiatives. For instance, it can connect to Microsoft's Communications Service and Exchange Instant Messaging IM platforms, both of which are chiefly associated with enterprise products."

"Microsoft's decision to promote in-house voice technology exclusively with the coming upgrade also comes as no surprise in light of recently unveiled plans to bring speech to Web Services with the release of the .NET Speech SDK."
