A few MSN Messenger 6.0 discoveries
A few MSN Messenger 6.0 discoveries

dwergs says ( 24 May 2003 ):

Some random facts about MSN Messenger 6.0 for those who haven't turned it inside out already:

- Did you know in MSN Messenger 6 you can sort your contacts by e-mail address instead of their Friendly Name? In your contact list view, go to

Contacts > Manage Contacts > View Contacts By > E-mail address

Someone's comment on this was: "Good, after all they're called nicknames, not nicksentences!".

- Did you know in MSN Messenger 6 you can send only 5 different custom emoticons in one time? This is probably related to a maximum amount of data (flood-control?) that can be sent at once. Something like timothy's Charlim might be able to fix this, but there's no 6.0 version out yet.

- Did you know in MSN Messenger 6 you can send a mass message to a complete group? Just right-click the group name of your choice (or quickly create one and put the desired contacts in there) and select "Send an Instant Message to this Group".

MSN Int(ernational) or Int(ernal) site: you tell us!

m_chibi says ( 24 May 2003 ):

As reported earlier, a site hosting the MSN Messenger 6.0 preview page came to our attention. Electrophreak wandered a bit further around http://www.msn-int.com, which also hosts the Tic-Tac-Toe game. Along the way, he discovered http://login.passport-int.net/uilogin.srf?id=6505, which doesn't allow you to check your e-mails just yet, but *MAYBE* you can be one of the first to register a @hotmail-int.com account?

**Update: Chances are very low these sign-ups will officially be registered.

Another MSN Messenger 6.0.0250 ad removal patch that does a little extra

dwergs says ( 24 May 2003 ):

Normally, we don't add identical patches, but pHaez's second version of his ad removal patch for MSN Messenger 6.0.0250 eliminates the "Make a Phone Call" ad and the (BETA) from the main client window title. Download here.

Another note about all these patches: Make a backup of your MSN Messenger files before applying any patch. Some patches might conflict with each other or simply refuse to work. We can not help you with that, sorry.

MSN Messenger 6 programming: 4 API's discovered!

dwergs says ( 24 May 2003 ):

Timothy discovered not zero (like mentioned on message boards and IRC), not one... but FOUR API's in MSN Messenger 6.0.0250! This is fantastic news for MSN add-on & bot developers who gave up after MSN 5 got released. To explore the matter, Timothy already wrote an MSN Messenger 6 programming article to get developers started.

**Update: vorte[x] posted dumps of the API's Timothy's talking about here

How about MSN Messenger 6.0 in Dutch?
How about MSN Messenger 6.0 in Dutch?

timothy says ( 24 May 2003 ):

After many requests, Mess.be is proud to present the first translation of the MSN 6 client. It will make al the people in the Netherlands and Belgium happy because it makes your MSN Messenger speak dutch.

PoTaToX spend 2 full days on translating all of it, but its worth the fame he will get from it ! Get your dutch update over here.

There was a few other people working on the dutch translation, but this was the first completely finished one we received. Thanks to the others for their effort anyhow!

#mess.be Chat Tab in MSN Messenger 6
#mess.be Chat Tab in MSN Messenger 6

m_chibi says ( 24 May 2003 ):

Would you like the Mess.be chat integrated in MSN Messenger 6.0? Well now you can:

1) Close down MSN Messenger 6.0, open Internet Explorer and copy paste this:

C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN Messenger\(your email address)

2) Right-click the Configcache, Open with Notepad and between...

< msntabdata > and < /msntabdata >

...you copy-paste this.

3) Save, close and log in again and the result will be, just like mess, enormously slick (judge for yourself with these screenshots: 1, 2, 3).

Also I recommed setting the ExpireInDays tag at the top of the XML file from it's value of 2 a big number, so MS dont go replacing your funky new tabs.

Note: This turns me on, by the mere coolness of it.

 Messenger 6.0 games without discrimination
Messenger 6.0 games without discrimination

m_chibi says ( 24 May 2003 ):

You want to play games and you're not in a country that is currently supported? Fear no more...

1) Close MSN Messenger 6 completely. Open Explorer and Open the following location:

C:\Documents and Settings\(your username)\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN Messenger\(your email address)

2)Open the file ConfigCache.xml in Notepad and find this line:

AppDirPageURL>http://appdirectory.messenger.msn-int.com/AppDirectory/Directory.aspx?L=en-uk

Note: the en-uk can be something else, this merely states in which country you live.

Change it to:

AppDirPageURL>http://appdirectory.messenger.msn-int.com/AppDirectory/Directory.aspx?L=en-us

We also recommend changing the ExpireInDays tag at the top of the XML file from it's value of 2 to 100+ so this fix doesn't change in 2 days time.

Now have fun with Tic-tac-toe and all the other games to come.

Thanks to João J, Razor D, Midas, E-Vix, Medz, horcy & Zero1 for correcting the MSN Messenger 6 emoticon overview I made.

And while I thought (||) was supposed to be a diablo, stickitincider might have a point recognising a bowl and Chinese chopsticks in the emoticon. Interesting.

Oh by the way, please stop requesting MSN Messenger 6.0 through e-mail. We can not offer it, but it's really out there so keep your eyes open.

Eurovision 2003 inspires MSN Messenger Karaoke

dwergs says ( 23 May 2003 ):

In relation to the Eurovision 2003 song contest tomorrow in Latvia, Microsoft UK is launching MSN Messenger Karaoke. To participate and maybe win a collection of top chart albums, you have to submit a song title or lyric that includes MSN Messenger emoticons --the current ones, no 6.0 emotes :).

For example if the song lyric you have chosen is 'It's my party and I'll cry if I want to' it would look like this...

"It's my and I'll if I want to!"

The competition is open to UK residents aged 18 or over only. The closing date June 13th, 2003.

More info at the MSN Messenger Karaoke competition page. (And should you be interested, more info about the Eurovision 2003 contest here)

Getting the Launch Site to work.
Getting the Launch Site to work.

timothy says ( 23 May 2003 ):

A lot of people are having difficulties using the "Launch Site" button in the leaked MSN 6 beta. This is caused because MSN wants them directed to their own foreign site. And the Launch Site Function is only working for US based MSN requests. But here is how to fool it.

1. Close your MSN messenger
2. Go to passport.net and log in to change your details
3. Go live in the US (well, virtually)
4. Move to the state of New York
5. And to make sure you virtually live there, your postal zip would be 10314 (NY City) in this case.
6. Log on to your MSN, and you should see some new tabs as well.

Note: It can take a while before your passport gets updated, try login on with multiple accounts to prevent caching.

MSN signed up Orange in the biggest deal yet for its MSN Messaging service to mobile phones
MSN signed up Orange in the biggest deal yet for its MSN Messaging service to mobile phones

dwergs says ( 20 May 2003 ):

MSN signed up French mobile carrier Orange in the biggest deal yet for its Hotmail and MSN Messaging service to mobile phones. In the deal, MSN gains access to 35 million potential customers in six countries, taking the total to 105 million mobile phone users in 13 countries who can get e-mail and instant messages from the Web forwarded to ordinary handsets in the form of short text messages (SMS).

Orange made the service available in Switzerland and the Netherlands a while ago to evaluate it. They were happy with it and extended the deal. The service will now be immediately available in Orange’s Western European markets, except in France and Belgium where the service will come online later this year. Orange’s Eastern European markets might follow later.

According to Ç®€åMhå©k€Réа, MSN Explorer 8.5 will be released soon but it will not contain MSN Messenger 6.0. The release is designed as an interim release for bug fixes and small improvements. MSN Messenger 6.0 will be intergrated with MSN Explorer 9 later this year. Expect major changes to MSN Explorer 9 with a new UI and changes to MSN Explorer and MSN Messenger allowing them to intergrate fully with Windows Explorer.
